Boat Or Lodge? The Peruvian Amazon
In the Peruvian Amazon, the first thing you’ll notice is the soundscape. Cicadas pulse in steady waves, frogs call from hidden pools, and howler monkeys rumble in the distance like far-off thunder. As you glide along the waterway, you’ll see that the forest itself seems to breathe; leaves caught by wind, branches creaking, rain still dripping from the last burst of shower. Zoom out and you can see the full picture – the vastness of the Amazon. And there you are, at the centre of it.
3 nights is a perfect extension to an already full and invigorating Peru Itinerary. You can include it at the beginning, or the end, as a totally different experience to witnessing the magnitude of Machu Picchu, walking the trails of the Incas, or exploring the historic Andean cities.
The intrepid traveller often revels in ‘meeting the Amazon again’, having sometimes experienced it first in other countries. Or perhaps this is your first time, a perfect introduction and easily accessible.
Even within Peru, you can ‘meet’ the Amazon in different regions, in different ways. We design Amazon journeys with two different approaches: a refined river-based experience in the northern Amazon, and a deeply immersive lodge experience in the southern rainforest. Both deliver outstanding wildlife and guiding. They serve slightly different travel styles.
A refined river journey in the northern Amazon
Amazon cruises offer the most polished way to explore the rainforest with the highest level of comfort. Guests stay aboard a boutique river vessel designed specifically for the Amazon, with a small number of cabins, and impeccable service. With air-conditioning and fine dining, these cruises offer a serene sanctuary from which to watch the Amazon slip by, glass of wine in hand.
The experience: Exploration with dedicated guides takes place daily by small skiff, allowing you to reach remote tributaries, flooded forests and wildlife corridors with little logistical hassle and no packing and unpacking. Wildlife encounters often include pink river dolphins, a wide range of birdlife and primates, with opportunities for activities such as short jungle walks, piranha fishing and swimming in dark, tannin-rich waters when conditions allow.
Getting there: The logistics are simple. Fly to Iquitos, drive less than 1 hour by van, board your vessel. Begin.
Guides and logistics are tightly coordinated from arrival, and service begins immediately. The journey is designed to feel effortless – from transfers to daily excursions – allowing you to focus entirely on the environment around.
Who this is best for:
- Couples, or multi-generational families seeking maximum comfort
- Travellers who want strong wildlife encounters without sacrificing amenities
- Those who value seamless logistics and a highly structured, well-paced itinerary
Deep rainforest immersion in southern Amazon
The southern Amazon offers a fundamentally different experience – one built around time on foot, scientific research and full immersion in protected rainforest.
Here, accommodation is on land, set deep within a conservation area. The lodges form part of the ecosystem itself and operate in close partnership with research and conservation programs.
The experience: Exploration is centred on guided walks through primary forest, visits to canopy towers, and night excursions to observe nocturnal wildlife. This region is particularly strong for close-range encounters with monkeys, birds, insects, and the extraordinary diversity of Amazonian plants and fruits. Clay licks attract large numbers of parrots and other bird species, creating some of the most memorable wildlife viewing in the region.
This style of travel is slower and more tactile. You feel the forest – its sounds, humidity, changing light and shifting weather. Air-conditioning is not part of the experience. Insects are. Meals are typically served family-style and are simpler than what you would expect on a river vessel.
Who this is best for
- Families (including those travelling with younger children)
- Nature-focused travellers who enjoy walking, observation and learning
- Those that wish to go deeper
Getting there: Fly to Puerto Maldonado, drop your large luggage at the main office. Travel ~2 hours by vehicle, board a small motorized launch boat and travel 2.5 hours along the river. As you travel you start to see fewer boats, fewer people, and the volume of the rainforest truly hits home. The adventure has already begun, before you reach the lodge.
The two seasons of the Amazon
There are two distinct rainy seasons in the Peruvian Amazon. Both high-water and low-water periods offer advantages for wildlife and access. Relatively speaking, both are equally enjoyable. Most species can be seen throughout the year – it might just change how you see them (I.e. from the ground, or from your skiff). In any event, seasoned guides work with the weather and plan days accordingly.
High water season: December – May
Rain is part of the ecosystem and does not prevent meaningful exploration. Showers are often brief, followed by sunshine and can be a refreshing break from the heat.
River ships sail closer to the shore, making it easier to spot birds and other wildlife from your cruise. Higher concentration of land animals and amphibians – higher chance of seeing turtles and caimans.
Low water season: June to November
Ideal for fishing as well as bird watchers as many species of migratory birds are in flight during this time. Access to jungle trails can be easier.
If you want to visit the Clay licks from your lodge, this can be done all year round. (Dec – February is nesting season but Jan & Feb are also rainiest months.)
Choosing the right Amazonian Experience
These two experiences are not competitors – they simply offer a different vantage point. And the Amazon rewards careful planning and expertise. Our role is to match you and your needs with the right style of Amazon experience – to know the boats and lodges well, manage regional differences and on-the-ground realities that make this part of the world so rewarding when planned well. We build journeys that let you experience it fully, in the way that suits you best.
