Oualidia-Oystercrates

Oysters came to Oualidia in the 1950s via an enterprising Frenchman from the Vendée region of France, who saw the rich conditions of the tidal lagoon and an opportunity. Portuguese oysters were first raised here, giving way later in the 1970s to a Japanese variety which is essentially the type of oysters still cultivated today and prized throughout Morocco.
