Postcard From the Edge

If you woke up this morning and said to yourself, “You know what I’d like to do today? Jump into a small pool right at the edge of a massive waterfall and then hang off the edge of said waterfall over a 108m vertical drop”, then by jove you’ve come to the right place.

I’ll be frank, going to the Devil’s Pool on Livingstone Island on the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls isn’t exactly a secret. It’s one of those well known things you can do that seems cliché before you do it, but in reality is actually totally amazing. You literally jump off a rock into a small pool right at the edge of the Victoria Falls and then hang over the edge. How cool is that?

The fine folks at Tongebezi lodge will take you out to the island by boat, walk you to the edge so you can scare your pants off, and then give you a rather excellent breakfast on the island afterwards. Jolly civil of them I’d say.

While the old saying, “do one thing every day that scares you”, is indeed a bit of a cliché, actually doing something that scares you witless and defying death at the edge of a huge waterfall, is not.

The only thing that seems to truly scare Dan is the prospect of missing a flight to Africa. He’s based in Toronto where he plans stupendous safaris from our main office. But he regularly jets to Africa for research and al fresco bathing. Fancy a dip on the edge of the Falls? You know who to call.
