Tangier-CaidsBar
The Caid’s Bar of the colonial style El Minzah hotel. The film Casablanca continues to draw people (Americans mostly) to that city, but it wasn’t filmed in Morocco at all. Rick’s Café was fictional, but there’s a popular belief that Caid’s bar served as the inspiration. The “Caid” in question is Sir Harry MacLean, whose portrait you see hanging here, soldier and trainer of the Moroccan Army for Sultan Moulay Hassan. A fellow Scotsman, Lord Bute, opened the Minzah in 1930 and it was for years the poshest address in Tangier
