Where To Go: January
Sure, the flurries are a beautiful novelty right now. We’re all dreaming of a white Christmas too. But come January, escape is going to be the only thing on your mind. Plan your trip now with a few of our favourite suggestions for this January. You can call it a new year’s resolution if that helps.
Cambodia—After you’ve seen the incredible temples of Angkor, flee the tourist throngs with a trip to Song Saa, a private island paradise just a short boat ride away from Sihanoukville.
Tanzania—The southern Serengeti is the place to be for action in January, as the tall grasses provide cover for the migrating zebra & wildebeest who come here to drop their young. The predators are no dummies and they know the drill—the buffet table has been set and you can practically see them licking their chops on the sidelines.
New Zealand—While the northern hemisphere suffers the slings and arrows of winter, New Zealand, and particularly the gorgeous Waiheke Island, is in its finest summer splendour. Now is the time for oceanside wine tastings, beautiful beaches, and a relaxing stay at The Boatshed.
Italy—For those of you who appreciate snow, just not in your city, the Dolomites are the place to book. Stay at the Rosa Alpina, for great skiing and active winter sports, and combine it with a few days in Venice out-of-season.
Botswana—To have your pick of the top camps at some pretty great discounts, January is a great time to visit. As an added bonus, African summer is the best time to see the Central Kalahari as the zebras gather in the thousands chasing the grass that briefly carpets the desert when the rains come.
South Africa—In January Cape Town’s holiday crowds have gone, leaving behind hot, sunny weather, open tables in all the top restaurants, and space at the beach, all set with a magnificent natural backdrop.
