A rather fast slow car

Kicking 2013 Into Gear

You may (or may not) have noticed that we haven’t posted a single new Sounder article since the tail end of 2012. What can I say, we’ve been busy planning a lot of trips. I hasten to add that our long-time, ever-steady and always-reliable Sounder editor, Amy Smithers, skipped town a month ago to travel the world for a year. Sad as we were to see her leave, we’re thrilled to see her hit the road in search of adventure—and totally understand her compulsion to quit winter. You can expect to see some dispatches from somewhere sunny sometime soon.

Speaking of hitting roads, I was reminded recently of a memorable short film from the 1970’s—C’était un Rendezvous, by French director Claude Lelouch. Less than 10 minutes long, the film nevertheless packs a tremendous wallop and features two of my favourite things. Classic cars and Paris. Which, in turn, reminded me of the fact that great ingredients don’t always go well together. Fun though it may be to race around in old cars, this is not the way to see Paris. Mais non. Places like Paris are meant to be sipped, not gulped. To really slip into the spirit of a destination you’ve got to give it time. That’s how we like to travel. And so, in the months ahead, we’ll be feeding you lots of nibbles on the Sounder. Clear your plate and buckle up.

Charlie loves fast cars and slow food. He’s been obsessed with Paris since he first visited, at age 16.
