A body of water you don't have to share with the wildlife
Photography: Dan Achber

Pool Party: Serengeti

The bush pool: it’s not always a necessity, but when you’ve worked up a sweat trying to count all the wildebeest in the Serengeti, you’ll certainly be glad it’s there.

Where: Nomad’s Lamai Serengeti, Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Why: After a morning spent watching literally thousands of wildebeest taking a cooling—yet terror filled—swim across the Mara River as the mercury climbs inexorably upwards, you’re going to be tempted to jump in with them. The fine people at Nomad have built a pool at Lamai Serengeti for the express purpose of giving you an alternative to playing chicken with four metre crocodiles. It is crucial that when you return to camp, you follow these important steps:

1. Get an ice cold beer.
2. Jump in the pool.

Remember…safety first.

Dan Achber has returned to our Toronto office with plenty of new African reconnaissance to share, and one stolen wildebeest to keep as a company pet.
