Danish Countryside Delight
While Copenhagen rightly remains a perennial favourite on the Scandinavian circuit, there are a number of delightful retreats dotting the Danish countryside that are worth including in your Nordic adventure. Not only does the setting of these charming inns make you appreciate the slower pace of rural living, they also house some of Scandinavia’s finest restaurants.
Historic Dragsholm Slot, just over an hour from Copenhagen along the West Zealand coast, makes for a romantic getaway for the senses. The castle – one of the country’s oldest – has been beautifully restored and is now home to two acclaimed restaurants including Michelin-starred “Slotskøkkenet”.
Falsled Kro is a much-loved Relais & Chateaux property on the island of Funen, South of Hans Christian Andersen’s home town of Odense. The perfect place to get your hygge or in any season.
Finally, it definitely takes some effort to get there, but a séjour at Henne Kirkeby Kro on the North Sea coast is well worth the detour. Securing a place to rest your head in one of the 12 uniquely-designed rooms requires months of advance planning, so does attaining a coveted table reservation at the Michelin-starred farm-to-table restaurant. But it’s well worth it.
