Water Bill Dinners

If you haven’t heard, San Diego is busting onto the scene as a top foodie destination. With excellent restaurants, microbreweries, and a truly local farmers market, it’s no wonder why the food here is so good. But on a recent trip to San Diego there is one experience that stood out among the rest – Cyclops Farm’s monthly water bill dinners.

If you’re wondering what a water bill dinners is, well, it’s exactly as it sounds. This small local farm hosts true farm-to-table dinners each month to pay for their monthly water bill, and any money left over goes to maintaining the farm. It’s quite genius actually as it’s a fun way to get the community together and involved while educating the public on local produce.

The dinners involve 60-100 people and will start with a tour of the organic farm lead by Farmer Luke. Then with Luke, you have the opportunity to plant a vegetable, which typically ends up with a whole row of the farm being planted. A couple months later you can then find the produce you planted available for sale at the local farmers market, full circle complete. Afterwards, enjoy a 4 or 5 course dinner created by a local partnering Executive Chef, using produce directly from Cyclops Farm. They also partner with a local brewery to bring you libations, sometimes creating a special drink just for that night, such as a strawberry stout, made with strawberries straight from the farm. They often bring in local musicians to provide the tunes for the party. I failed to mention that the farm is set on a hill with epic views of the pacific and sunset…

If you didn’t want to go for dinner but were interested in a visit the farm, then we recommend a food tour with Epicurean San Diego. These culinary tours are community driven and locally inspired. With a local expert you are taken to hidden gems in and around San Diego where you can taste and sip your way through some of the best local haunts, Cyclops Farms being one of them.

So next time you’re in San Diego, take some time to indulge yourself in the growing foodie scene, you will be pleasantly surprised if perhaps a few pounds heavier.
