Trip Tease

Brazil seems to be hogging the limelight lately, with the FIFA World Cup this summer and the Olympics in 2016. While we love it as a destination, there is plenty more in this area of the world to be excited about. Our Latin American enthusiasts here at Trufflepig feel we shouldn’t neglect the rest of the region. To help you decide where you may want to explore, here are a few suggestions.

Patagonia (Chile and Argentina)

For those seeking for wilderness, look no further. Patagonia is a huge swath of land covering the southern cone of Chile and Argentina. Spend your days hiking in the Lake District, admiring the rugged peaks in Torres del Paine National Park, meeting gauchos, visiting glaciers, and possibly even walking on one (time to don those crampons!). Evenings are easily spent admiring the stars above and reflecting on life in wild Patagonia—while enjoying a nice glass of wine and a sumptuous meal, of course. The new Awasi in Torres del Paine National Park is the perfect place to spend a few nights in comfort while exploring the great outdoors, or try the historic Singular.

Machu Picchu (Peru)

One of the most iconic sites in South America, Machu Picchu is a highlight of any trip to the region. For those looking for an active experience that doesn’t sacrifice comfort, why not sign up for the Mountain Lodges of Peru trek, a definite step up from the traditional Inca Trail. For the less active, it is possible to reach Machu Picchu by train; the most luxurious is the Hiram Bingham, which turns an already exciting journey into an experience. The Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel is a superb place to stay overnight and make the most of your once in a lifetime visit.

Galapagos Islands (Ecuador)

Calling all wildlife enthusiasts—the Galapagos Islands are a must-see destination. Swim with sea lions, snorkel with sea turtles, admire albatross, hike in the highlands, and become mad about blue-footed boobies. It never ceases to amaze us how close you can get to the wildlife, and just how much history there is on the islands. The Galapagos also make a fantastic family holiday so if you are worried about the kids getting bored—don’t be. Special family departures ensure children of all ages have fun, while learning and experiencing many new things. A couple of our favourite vessels are La Pinta and Ocean Spray, but we recommend a number of other accommodation options, so do contact us for more details on how best to explore the islands.

Uruguay

Uruguay is a great country with some fantastic beaches. From celebrities looking for a chic getaway, to those seeking to soak up some sun somewhere different, Uruguay attracts a wonderful mix of people. Playa Vik, in the small but fashionable village of Jose Ignacio, is one of our favourites. It’s the perfect place to relax and explore rugged landscapes, walk along the pristine beaches, and meet with musicians, artists, and authors who have made this area their home.

Costa Rica

Central America should not be forgotten, and Costa Rica certainly ticks many boxes. Bursting with wildlife, adventurous activities, and stunning volcanoes, this country has something for everyone. It also has some pretty good beaches and hotels if you are looking to throw in some R&R. A short hop from North America means Costa Rica is easily accessible to many with less travel time. There is an abundance of choice in what to see and do, and it also makes a perfect family holiday destination for children of all ages. A couple of our favourite hotels are Pacuare Lodge inland, and Lapa Rios on the coast.

Mexico

Such a vast country with so much to see and do, Mexico can present tough decisions: which coast to go for, Caribbean or Pacific? Which vibe to seek, culture or adventure? Soak up some culture in Mexico City or the colonial towns nearby (great for shopping for silver), perhaps explore a Mayan ruin or two, and flop on the beach for a few nights to make the most of warm water and golden sand. There really is something for everyone here, so it’s hard to choose a favourite spot, though we love Tulum on the Mayan Riviera and Punta Mita north of Puerto Vallarta. As for properties, check-out Imanta or Verana as two teasers of what we like down Mexico way.

Trufflepig’s Latin America team is at your service no matter which country (or countries) you choose. Get in touch with them to get your trip started.
